Charity Evacuation - Mission of Hope
Mother of three requiring urgent medical attention after surgery
Under special circumstances, AMREF Flying Doctors provides a charity evacuation service, whereby AMREF Flying Doctors will evacuate a patient in a serious medical condition free of charge.
The process is one that requires a rapid response and the provision of the high-level medical care that has become the cornerstone of AMREF Flying Doctors’ assistance services.
Charity evacuations are supported by donations from various sources including individual donations, fundraising by our Country Offices and corporates.
This story recounts a recent Charity Evacuation.
Charity Evacuation - Mission of Hope 17 March 2012
A pregnancy is usually welcomed with a lot of joy and anticipation for the things to come. This was not so for Halima, a 35 year old mother of three. Halima had given birth seven times with her first four children passing away between two days and two years of age. Halima had three remaining children, aged between three and seven and was 32 weeks pregnant.
Halima hails from Lamu on the coast of Kenya, one of the most popular tourist destinations in the region. Lamu is a peaceful tropical island where life is lived at its own relaxed rhythm. It’s a place whose history is as mysterious and fascinating as the winding streets of its medieval stone town. There are no vehicles on this island—even ambulances—and donkeys and dhows remain the dominant form of transport.
