First Aid Training

AMREF Flying Doctors runs a three day First Aid course for management and staff of organizations, companies and communities, as well as individuals.

The course covers vital aspects of First Aid to ensure safety at the work place, home, and in the field.

After three days of practical and theoretical studies, the course culminates in a two-part examination. Courses can accommodate up to 20 students and are currently only available on request.

Academic Requirements

All participants must have a sound comprehension of English, both written and spoken.

Venue

Courses are held at AMREF’s International Training Centre on Langata Road, Nairobi, unless otherwise agreed.

Equipment

The  Training equipment includes resuscitation mannequins, splints, bandages and others. Where applicable, a semi-automatic defibrillator and airway trainer.

Trainers

Each course is conducted by two of our full-time flight nurses, who have longstanding teaching experience and several years of working experienceon the job. All our flight nurses are qualified and registered with additional degrees in Intensive Care nursing and trained in Advanced Cardiac, Trauma and Paediatric Life Support.

Costs

The total cost for the course, including meals, tea and coffee, is US$1,300 for up to 20 participants. However, if the training is held outside of Nairobi, the cost is US$1,600 exclusive of accommodation and transport. Accommodation and transport for the AMREF trainers can be provided by the client or will be charged accordingly.

The cost for the course includes all teaching aids, mannequins, first aid equipment and manuals. A complementary quick reference booklet of First Aid techniques accompanies the course and a certificate is issued on successful completion of the course.

Course Curriculum

Day 1:

  • Principles and Practices of Emergency First Aid
  • *Basic Aviation Physiology (Only for flight crews)
  • Breathing and Circulatory Disorders
  • CPR Theory
  • CPR Practice, incl. chocking
  • *Defibrillation with semi-automatic defibrillator (Only for flight crews)

Day 2:

  • Burns and Scalds
  • Poisoning
  • Foreign Bodies
  • Management of bleeding
  • Injuries to Bones, Joints, Muscles and Ligaments
  • Immobilisation of fractures and bandaging
  • Practice - Immobilisation of fractures and bandaging

Day 3:

  • Emergency Childbirth
  • Brain Disorders
  • Hypoglycaemia
  • *Case Scenarios (In-flight patient management)
  • Triage
  • Casualty evacuation
  • Theory Test
  • Practical Exam
  • Evaluation
